Nelson Recycling Center

The Nelson Recycling Center is a Chipatso project focused on addressing waste in Cape Maclear and finding practical ways to reuse materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Cape Maclear is a growing community and tourist destination but there are limited options for dealing with waste. Much of the waste generated by households and businesses is burned, buried or discarded in informal dumping areas. This creates environmental and health concerns for the community and surrounding area, including Lake Malawi.

The Nelson Recycling Center is being developed as a place where materials can be collected, sorted and repurposed. We are focusing initially on materials such as bottle caps, plastic, glass, metal, paper, old tiles and other items that can be reused or transformed into something useful. The space is also being used to conduct classes in traditional crafts such as weaving and carving. The space is also being used to teach the locals how to paint and use discarded tiles for mosaic. With its Pineapple theme the possibility for creativity is endless.

Community and Education

The center is intended to be more than a collection point. We want it to provide opportunities for local people to learn skills, earn income and participate in creating solutions to a problem that affects the entire community.

We also plan to work with the youth in our program, the local elementary school, university students, volunteers and visitors on projects that demonstrate how discarded materials can be reused. Art and construction projects will be an important part of this work, allowing students and community members to turn waste into something functional, educational or visually meaningful.

One of our long-term projects is to create sculptures representing the many species of fish found in Lake Malawi using discarded materials. These sculptures would be installed in local schools and public spaces as both artwork and educational tools, connecting the problem of waste with the importance of protecting the lake and its biodiversity.

A Local Approach

Our goal is to develop a recycling program that works within the realities of Cape Maclear. Rather than relying on systems or equipment that are difficult to maintain locally, we want to use practical methods, locally available materials and skills that can be developed within the community.

As the project grows, we hope to expand the types of materials we can process, create additional employment opportunities and develop products and artwork that can generate income to support the center.

The Nelson Recycling Center is still developing so we welcome individuals, schools, universities, artists, environmental organizations and other partners who would like to contribute ideas, materials, equipment or financial support.
